The origin of the cluster dates back to the 18th century when fishermen from furadouro, attracted by the abundance of fish, settled here. The proximity to Porto's market made it possible for the makeshift dwellings to evolve into stone houses. The fishing activity still persists, but has been losing.

The "Espinho" beach has an excellent area of sand but the wind and cold water are predominant throughout almost the whole year. A lot of wind and waves.
